December 8, 2006 greetings everyone! it’s been a minute, and like
everyone else, I’ve gotten pulled into the hibernation mode these days…when I’m not grading semester-end papers, I’m cozying up by the heater and pondering about life :-)…but before leaving for a bit to spend time w/the fam, here are some events I highlyrecommend checking out, as well as a few updates and things on next year’s horizon. keep warm and hug your

Environmental Network/Laotian Organizing Project WHAT: Environmental leaders and Richmond residents attest to Chevron Corporation’s negative impacts on the environmental health and safety of residents of Pandacan, the Philippines, and Richmond, California, insisting that Chevron must recognize and implement corporate responsibility towards affected communities both locally and internationally. Over sixty people, primarily Bay Area residents, environmental groups, and college students will rally and carry “fenceline” community images and banners. The event, which takes place at the finish line of a 40 mile bike-a-thon/ walk-a-thon tour highlighting Chevron’s San Ramon world headquarters and Richmond refinery, marks the launch of FACES’ CAREnow! (Chevron Accountability and Responsibility for the Environment Now!). WHY: Chevron Corporation’s unsafe practices are a persistent threat to environmental health and human rights. Low-income, minority residents located on the fenceline of Chevron refineries and depots are vulnerable to fires, explosions, toxic spills, and emissions including cancer-causing benzene and dioxins, and experience health impacts including asthma and cancers, especially in children. Residents of Pandacan, Manila demand that the hazardous oil depot be relocated away from the densely populated district, which is home to over 84,000 residents and is potentially the site of the world’s biggest petrochemical disaster. Research conducted by FACES’ partner United Front to Oust Oil Depots and Bay Area-based Global Community Monitor have shown alarming levels of benzene in the air. In Richmond, the Chevron refinery emits a million pounds of toxics and 500,000 pounds into the bay in an average year,
making it one of the top five chemical polluters in California, according to Earth Island Institute Journal. This is the final event in the kickoff of FACES’ CAREnow! Campaign,
created in partnership with the organized fenceline community of
Pandacan and supported by local Bay Area environmental justice
organizations. The campaign aims to build public awareness and to
pressure Chevron Corporation, the second largest oil company in the
